A Hands on Learning Experience…
For those students who are interested in nursing or other medical professions or who want to live a few days in the shoes of a doctor or surgeon, this hands-on, highly educational camp may be a first step toward a healthcare career. The Bon Secours Nursing Explorers Camps offers a one-of-a-kind experience to rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders interested in the wide world of medicine.
The day camp gives participants real-life experiences in hospital environment and is full of hands on activities including:
- learning CPR and first aid
- performing Jello Brain Surgery
- dissecting pig’s hearts
- suturing pig’s feet
- starting IVs
- using various medical equipment (to include but not limited to stethoscopes, suture needles, blood pressure cuffs, etc.)
The camp runs from August 15 to August 19 and the campers are involved from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM every day. Each of the three hospitals (Bon Secours DePaul, Bon Secours Mary Immaculate, and Bon Secours Maryview) will host its own camp with 16 campers. Campers will be responsible for their transportation to and from camp each day. A light breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack will be served each day. Campers will be required to wear the camp scrub shirt they receive on the first day of camp each day.
This program is only open to rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Those campers interested in attending the camp must fill out and submit their own application forms online for review. From the applications, our staff will select the top 16 applicants and offer them the opportunity to participate in the program.
The online application due by April 30, 2011.
The cost of the camp is $100.00 per camper. This fee includes the full week of camp and all camp supplies. There are a limited number of need-based scholarships that are available, please contact Wendi Hughes for more information.
