Lawn Mower Safety

Children love to help around the house, but using a lawn mower should wait until a child is at least 12 years old, medical professionals say. For ride-on mowers, the age is 16.

Every summer, thousands of children are hurt by lawn mowers, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children should never be passengers on ride-on mowers.

If they are old enough to operate a lawn mower, they should wear eye and hearing protection as well as sturdy shoes, not sandals.

Some of the preventable injuries caused by lawn mowers include: broken bones, deep cuts, missing fingers and toes, limb amputations and eye wounds.
