Avoiding BPA

Medical authorities already urge people to stay away from plastic containers and eating utensils that contain bisphenol A, or BPA, because the chemical has been linked to infertility as well as breast and prostate cancers.

Now, a new study from the University of Michigan School of Public Health says this endocrine disruptor may also affect levels of thyroid hormones in the body.

Check plastic containers for the recycle code numbers 3 or 7 because those may be made with BPA, according to the National Institutes of Health.

In general, recycle codes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are unlikely to have BPA.
