If I Can Do it, Anyone Can Do It

Nine Bon Secours Hampton Roads employees graduate from the health system’s first-ever School at Work class. The program offers a refresher course on basic skills and medical terminology.

Congratulations to Bon Secours Hampton Roads’ first School at Work graduating class! On May 20, nine employees completed the 28-week program that helps students improve their basic skills and learn more in the field of health care. Bon Secours Richmond has offered School at Work successfully for more than five years, graduating about 60 employees. This was the first year it was provided in Hampton Roads.

To learn more about the program, we asked School at Work graduate Daphne Bell, 51, who is a patient account representative at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. She’s been with the health system for 11 years.

Q. How did you find out about School at Work?
A. I saw it on the Bon Secours website. The moment I saw it I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

Q. What attracted you to School at Work?
A. It is an education. Bon Secours was going to pay for it. Bon Secours was going to invest in my education and my future. I couldn’t wait for it to start. I was counting down the days.

Q. What were some initial concerns you had?
A. It had been quite awhile since I had been in school.

Q. What surprises did you come across while attending School at Work?
A. The atmosphere. The teachers were great. They got to the point where they knew us and could tell when we had questions or needed more help. They made it easy for us and taught us in a relaxed atmosphere. I am so grateful to them for keeping us focused on our goals and making learning exciting.

Q. How was it handling work, school and home life?
A. It was a bit hard but well worth it. Knowing the schedule and having a timeframe helped.

Q. How would you describe your overall experience?
A. It is a wonderful program. Every time you go back to school, you increase your own value, you learn something.

Q. Now that you’ve graduated from School at Work, what’s next?
A. School at Work sparked a desire in me to go back to school. I have goals now. I’m going back to the school – Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach – I went to 30 years ago, and I’m going to study medical coding. I’m really excited about it.

Q. What would you say to other employees about School at Work?
A. At my age, if I can do it, anyone can do it. Bon Secours is a growing organization and they want their people to grow, too. So take advantage of it. They are investing in us and they care about us. This company is so confident in what it has to offer that it knows you will stay here after you get your education. I want to stay with Bon Secours and grow with them. There are so many opportunities here.
