But these cheap and trendy summertime accessories leave certain parts of our bodies repeatedly exposed to the sun.
“The problem with flip-flops and baseball caps is that they leave the tips of the ears and the tops of the feet dangerously exposed to sun damage,” said Dr. Rebecca Tung, director of the Division of Dermatology at Loyola University Medical Center in a news release. “The potential for skin cancers in those areas are real, especially on the tips of the ears.”
It’s important to make sure your ears and feet are covered in a broad spectrum sunscreen before you leave the house.
According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. It can be prevented by avoiding too much sun and tanning booths. Melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, can be treated if it’s caught early.
If the current rates of skin cancer cases continue, one in five Americans will eventually develop the disease. About 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
