Flu season might not be the first thing on your mind as you enjoy summer’s beach days and outdoor barbecues, but federal health officials are busy making sure a flu vaccine will be ready for the public this fall.
Now is a great time to call your family doctor to see when you should schedule your flu shot appointment. Between 5 and 20 percent of the nation’s population develop influenza every year, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The vaccine is developed by researchers who predict which strains are most likely to cause the most illness in the upcoming flu season. But even if the vaccine doesn’t match the strains exactly, it can reduce the severity of the illness and prevent related complications, according to the FDA.
