Urinary incontinence, or the loss of bladder control, is an embarrassing and taboo topic in our society. Many women suffer the symptoms in silence out of shame and a misguided belief that this condition is a “normal part of aging.” Dr. Craig Ruetzel, an ob/gyn with Hampton Roads OB/GYN Center, wants women to know that many advances in treatment mean that they don’t have to live with urinary incontinence – but the first step towards a cure is just talking with their doctor.
While many women fear that urinary incontinence is a rare condition, according to Dr. Ruetzel 30-40% percent of women over 35 suffer from this condition. As Dr. Ruetzel says, “Women shouldn’t hold on to their symptoms. Procedures to fix urinary incontinence are typically covered by insurance and can be performed on an outpatient basis in about 20 minutes.”
