Fall into Action: Getting Physically Fit

The days are cooler while the sun shines bright, and that special fall smell fills the air, inviting you to spend some time outdoors after a long, hot summer. Yet after dinner, the family room sofa beckons you to watch the evening news and a long stream of mindless shows all the way to bedtime.

Stop! Clean up the dishes and head outdoors. Fall is a great time to step into action to get energized and fit. Here are a few ideas to help you get active:

  • Nature
Take in the beauty of fall color by walking or hiking at a nearby park. You don’t have to tackle Everest or buy equipment. Grab your sneakers and walk around your neighborhood or find easy hikes for everyone in your group by scoping out local parks or walking trails. Check out the Bon Secours In Motion Blog for tips on how to get (and stay) active!
  • Sports
Check with your local school and department of parks and recreation to join a sports league or a fitness program. Sign the kids up, too. If you’re too shy to hit the gym cold, hire a personal trainer for a few sessions to help get you started on an exercise program.
  • Yard Work
Leaves need raking, shrubs and trees need pruning, and flowers need cutting back. Don’t let a perfect fall evening pass without tackling these calorie-burning chores that can be fun and gratifying for the whole family.
  • Hit the Road
Fall is a great time to start a walking or running regimen. You can even walk or run for a good cause; many worthy causes hold walks or 5K runs throughout the year – so log online and see what’s going on in Hampton Roads!
  • Seasonal Outings
It’s harvest time! Take the family out for apple-picking, corn mazes and hayrides at a nearby orchard. As an example, Norfolk Botanical Garden holds a series of Fall and Winter events that are fun for the whole family!

Fall is a wonderful time to get active. Make a decision today to leave the sofa behind!
