Healthy Diet Affects Risk of Birth Defects

Pregnant moms who want to cut their baby’s risk of neural tube birth defects, such as spina bifida or a cleft palette, should eat healthy foods, according to Stanford University researchers.

After analyzing the diets of women who had children with and without neural tube defects, researchers determined that those who ate a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish had a lower risk of having a baby with a defect. The study was published by the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
