Despite advances in the understanding of treatment for mental illness, people who live with bipolar disorder, major depression, schizophrenia, and other severe and persistent conditions continue to face barriers in public attitudes that often deter them from engaging in recovery.
In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Month, Bon Secours Behavioral Medicine Center, in collaboration with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will be hosting a public education program entitled, “In Our Own Voice.”
“In Our Own Voice” is a unique public education program developed by NAMI, in which a trained consumer speaker will share compelling personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery. This program is designed to reduce the stigma against persons with mental illness and allow people to learn about mental illness “from people who have been there.” Audience participation and discussion will be encouraged.
