In 2009, the number of home cooking fires on Thanksgiving was three times the national average. To prevent kitchen fires and a trip to the emergency room, follow these safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:
- Keep all flammable items away from the stovetop. This includes oven mitts, wooden spoons, food wrappers and towels.
- Do not leave a working stove unattended. Turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen, even for a short period of time.
- Check your food regularly to make sure it’s not catching on fire.
- Don’t use the stove or stove top if you are sleepy or have been drinking alcohol.
