Avoid Kitchen Fires on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving isn’t just famous for eating turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. It’s also known as one of the busiest days for firefighters.

In 2009, the number of home cooking fires on Thanksgiving was three times the national average. To prevent kitchen fires and a trip to the emergency room, follow these safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Keep all flammable items away from the stovetop. This includes oven mitts, wooden spoons, food wrappers and towels.
  • Do not leave a working stove unattended. Turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen, even for a short period of time.
  • Check your food regularly to make sure it’s not catching on fire.
  • Don’t use the stove or stove top if you are sleepy or have been drinking alcohol.
