Beginning November 2011, Family Focus will expand to the Southside, bringing with it the support to strengthen families and promote the well-being of children through community based and culturally sensitive prevention services. Initially Family Focus will offer four classes:
- Active Parenting of Teens
An effective and unique approach to improving parent-teen interaction. Parents will learn to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts and discuss difficult topics such as violence, drugs, alcohol and sex.
- Active Parenting 1234 Parents
A research-based video and discussion workshop for parents of children ages 1 to 4. Parents will learn the four stages of child development, nonviolent discipline skills and how they can set rules that young children can understand and follow.
- Active Parenting Now
A research-based video and discussion workshop for parents of children ages 5 to 12. Parents will learn the necessary skills for instilling cooperation, courage, responsibility and self-esteem, including nonviolent discipline skills and rules that their children can understand and follow.
- Parents Raising Safe Kids
An interactive parenting program for parents of children from birth to 8 years old. Parents will learn about children’s behavior and developmental stages, and will learn positive methods for discipline. They will also learn how to teach children to control their anger and resolve conflicts with others in a nonviolent way.
Classes will be held at the DePaul Medical Center Nurse Aide Training Program Center, located at 150 Kingsley Lane, 4th Floor, Norfolk, VA 23505.
