Mammogram Guidelines

It’s not hard to be confused about when women should start having routine mammograms.

According to the American Cancer Society, yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40. But officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend women get them every two years from ages 50 to 74. And now a Canadian task force is recommending women there to start having mammograms every two to three years from ages 50 to 74.

Perhaps the best advice is to talk to your doctor who can take into consideration your age, medical history and family history of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women, according to the American Cancer Society. The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is about 1 in 8.
