Know Your HIV Status

One in five people with HIV do not know they are infected, according to a Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And only half of those who are aware receive ongoing medical care and treatment from their doctor.

Federal health authorities urge people to be tested and receive treatment because it can help prevent the spread of HIV. A recent National Institutes of Health study of heterosexual couples showed that those who are infected but take antiretroviral therapy and practice safer behaviors can reduce the risk of transmitting HIV by 96 percent.
