Take Charge of Your Health in 2012

While the start of a new year is often the start of new fitness resolutions, we want to focus on lowering your health risks all year ’round.

Through last year’s Personal Health Assessments, our organization found that 55 percent of all Bon Secours Virginia employees completing a personal health assessment scored in the moderate to high-risk categories. Not only is this important for those individuals, but for our entire health system. For example, annually, the health care costs for an obese person are $1,400 higher; a smokers’ costs rise by $4,000.

To address these issues, Bon Secours is adopting an Accountable Care Organization model, in which we address costly health risks. We encourage you to joint us in focusing on:

  • Diabetes – 1.9 million Americans 20 or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2011. Many more are pre-diabetic.
  • Hypertension – One-third of Americans have high blood pressure (31.3 percent).
  • Asthma – 412,370 adults in Virginia report having asthma.
  • Ortho (back problems) – 70 to 85 percent of people have back pain in their life.

Bon Secours offers a variety of programs and resources to help promotes good health in our community. If you need help taking control of your health, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or give us a call at (757) 889-CARE (2273).
