Federal health officials issued a warning to diabetes patients and their health care providers who may falsely believe that it is alright to share insulin pens with multiple people as long as the needle is changed.
This is akin to sharing a needle syringe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recently posted a video message online. When the same insulin pen is used, patients can be exposed to blood borne pathogens like hepatitis viruses and HIV. It does not matter if the needle is changed. The risk still exists.
