This week is Volunteer Appreciation Week, a time to recognize our dedicated and world class Bon Secours volunteers. Here are three stories highlighting the good work that these members of our team provide – far beyond what many of us imagine:
Emergency Department Volunteering
Despite her age, teen volunteer Kaila Mullay brings a level of maturity and passion to her volunteer work that inspires others. Her personality and knowledge make it easy for staff, patients, and their families to work with her or accept her help during times of need. Kaila often trains new teen and adult Emergency Department volunteers. She’s off to Virginia Tech this fall to pursue a career in medicine.
Do you know that over 60% of the patients who visit the Care-A-Van do not speak English? Bon Secours has a group of skilled volunteers who provide interpreter services. Many have undergone a 40-hour training course provided by Patty Gavilan, RN, Manager of Cross-Cultural Services. In return for this training, volunteers commit to an additional 150 hours of volunteer service.

Hospice volunteers provide patient and family support, including social and emotional help, but their work extends regularly exceeds expectations. Many homeowners would agree that taking care of a home and yard is challenging when you have a busy life. This is especially true for Hospice caregivers who are providing for loved ones. For the last four years, Bon Secours Hospice in Hampton Roads has been offering yard and minor housework for Hospice families in need. One patient’s last wish was to have the home her husband has built for them look like need. Volunteers spent two months painting the exterior of the home. Not all projects are as big as this. Sometimes families need their gutters cleaned, leaves raked, or their flower beds weeded and mulched. This month Hospice has been cleaning and sealing an outdoor deck for a family.

Please take the time today to thank your caregivers and volunteers around you for their commitment to good help throughout the community.
