Meet Your Pediatrician Before Baby Comes

Expectant mothers should add another item to their pre-baby check list: selecting and meeting with your pediatrician.

Your pediatrician is going to be an important part of your life for at least the next two decades, so picking the right one can be a big deal. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that all expectant mothers take the opportunity to pick and meet with their pediatrician face-to-face before their baby is born. This gives new families a chance to become comfortable with your child’s doctor and office staff.

This first meeting is a good time to gather information about scheduling appointments, office hours, who to contact after hours, and how to approach any health issues that you or the baby may have.

Make sure to discuss breastfeeding vs. bottle-feeding, immunizations, circumcision, and any other topics you are thinking about with the doctor beforehand. You want to feel comfortable with your pediatrician – not that you’re struggling to come to a consensus on care.

Almost all pediatric offices offer a free prenatal visit and opportunity for parents to meet the doctor and take a tour.
