When summer’s heat turns up, many people pull out their flip-flops to help stay cool. In an effort to promote good foot health, the American Podiatric Medical Association recommends the following flip-flop guidelines for those who choose to wear them:
- Replace flip-flops when they show signs of wear.
- Choose high quality, soft leather flip-flops to reduce the possibility of irritation or blisters.
- Make sure the flip-flop bends at the ball of the foot. It should not fold in half.
- Choose other supportive footwear for walking long distances, playing sports or doing yard work. Flip-flops offer little shock absorption and arch support.
Looking for a more supportive flip-flop? The APMS offers a list of footwear that meets specific criteria for their Seal of Approval.
