Surgery Complications – Another Reason to Quit Smoking

If you’re planning to have hip or knee replacement surgery, make sure to quit smoking to improve your surgery’s chances for success.

Studies have found that smokers who use continue their nicotine habit have more complications after surgery than non-smokers. In fact, smoking has been associated with hip and knee replacement failure, according to a press release from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

In one study of knee replacements, complications included blood clots, anemia, cardiac problems and acute renal failure.
