Massachusetts maternity hospitals have unanimously stopped offering free infant formula gift bags to new mothers this month.
Breast feeding advocates are hailing the simultaneous decision across the state by citing numerous studies that show mothers who receive free formula are less likely to breastfeed their infants to 1 month old. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that mothers exclusively breast-feed for the first six months to provide babies with protection against many illnesses and allergies and even prevent diabetes.
