Eat Healthy Foods Before Pregnancy

Women can lower their chances of developing gestational diabetes mellitus by eating healthy foods before pregnancy, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Gestational diabetes affects about 18 percent of all pregnancies, according to the American Diabetes Association. It can cause a baby to gain extra weight. It can also put infants at higher risk for breathing problems.

Infants who are born with excess insulin may face a higher risk for obesity as children and for type 2 diabetes when they are adults.
