Avoiding store-bought foods known to be connected to outbreaks of listeriosis or salmonella is one way to prevent illness. But consumers can do more by keeping the temperature of their refrigerator at 40°F or lower and the freezer at 0°F or lower.
Listeria monocytogenes can grow in foods in the fridge. Use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature regularly.
