Food and Drug Administration officials are reminding the public to be aware that all infants may face a higher risk of developing a life-threatening condition if fed SimplyThick – a product that is supposed to help babies swallow their food and keep it down.
More than 20 infants have developed necrotizing enterocolitis after being fed SimplyThick. Seven of them died. Necrotizing enterocolitis is a condition that kills intestinal tissues, according to a news release from the FDA.
Health officials cannot say the deaths are linked to SimplyThick but they warn caregivers to be aware of the potential risk before feeding SimplyThick to infants of any age. For more information, visit the FDA’s website.
