A well balanced diet has been shown to protect us from diseases. But did you know that a well balanced diet can also protect the brain and affect attentiveness?
There are several chemical processes that cause what you eat to be broken down into components your body uses. Food is like a medication that affects your brain. This holds an exciting potential; to be able to alter the health of one’s brain and daily mental functions by the way one eats.
Consuming foods that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids can provide benefits that include improved learning and memory. “Omega-3 fatty acids support synaptic plasticity and seem to positively affect the expressions of several molecules related to learning and memory that are found on synapses,” says Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a member of UCLA’s Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Center.
Children who had increased amounts of omega-3 fatty acids performed better in school, in reading and in spelling and had fewer behavioral problems, Gomez-Pinilla says.
Getting omega-3 fatty acids from food can have more benefits than a supplement. Food sources of omega-3 fatty acids provides additional nutrients and provides them in a way our body may be able to absorb better; the way nature puts them together.
Try to make it a habit to eat fish two to three times a week. Great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids include:
- Rainbow Trout
- Black Cod
- Grass-Fed Beef
- Omega-3 Enriched Eggs
It just might help you stay attentive and boost your memory capability.
