Should your home lose power during Hurricane Sandy, keep your food safe to eat with the following tips from the American Red Cross.
Keep the freezer and refrigerator closed. Food will stay cold for a couple of hours if the door is not opened. A freezer that is half full will stay cold for up to 24 hours. If it’s full, it may stay cold for 48 hours. Eat shelf-stable foods instead.
If the power is more than likely going to be out for more than 24 hours, shift the most important things in your refrigerator to your freezer. If the power could be out for beyond a day or so, pack items and ice in a smaller cooler.
Food that is exposed to temperatures greater than 40 degrees for more than two hours should be discarded.
