Many people are staying away from soda because the sweet drinks contain have no nutritional value and an average 150 calories. But it turns out that almost one-third of men and 18 percent of women are also consuming empty calories through alcohol.
In fact, men between the ages of 20 and 39 actually consume more calories – 174 per day – from alcoholic beverages than soda.
Federal dietary guidelines recommend that those who drink, should practice moderation. One drink per day for a woman. Two drinks per day for a man.
However, many people drink more than that. Federal health statistics show that 19 percent of men consume more than 300 calories daily from alcohol. About 12 percent of women consume more than 150 calories daily.
