Most people know they can prevent illness by washing fruits likes grapes and apples because the peel is edible. But it’s also important to clean foods like bananas and oranges before you peel them because dirt and bacteria can be transferred from the knife onto the fruit or vegetable, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The Academy also recommends gently rubbing produce under plain running water. Soaps and produce wash are not necessary. But make sure to dry all produce with a clean cloth or paper towel because that will reduce any bacteria that still remain.
