“Cinnamon Challenge” Poses Health Risks, Study Finds

Health officials are warning parents about a potentially dangerous stunt that dares young people to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon.

At least 30 youths have needed medical attention after attempting this dare, which triggers a severe gag reflex, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Some adolescents have gone to the emergency room; others have been hospitalized for collapsed lungs. Large amounts of cinnamon can be harmful “because of the fibers and other components of the spice,” a press release states. The U.S. poison control centers received more than 175 calls in 2012 related to this stunt.

Parents should be aware that children are finding information about this challenge from the internet. More than 50,000 videos of the stunt have been posted on the popular YouTube site, a recent study found.
