Managing Diabetes with a Diabetes Specialist

Dr. Semret Mebrahtu recently joined Ghent Family Practice & Internal Medicine in Norfolk. Prior to joining Bon Secours, she worked in Winston- Salem, N.C. Mebrahtu is recognized in the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Diabetes Physician Recognition Program.

What’s most important about managing a chronic condition such as diabetes?
Do the patients feel like they have a role in taking care of their diabetes? The patient has to take an active role for a treatment plan to work. When patients are newly diagnosed, part of my job is getting them set up with a Diabetes Educator, so they can learn about the disease process and what it entails, like learning how to check their blood sugar levels.

Why did you join a family and internal medicine practice?
In addition to providing management of ongoing medical conditions, Ghent Family Practice & Internal Medicine accepts walk-in appointments, so I have an opportunity to see urgent care cases. I enjoy being able to help adults in our community with a variety of illnesses.

Why did you choose Bon Secours?
I chose Bon Secours over other health systems because of our mission and our service to patients.
